Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21. Mutable Fire sign. Colors: Deep purple, burgundy and deep red. Outgoing, athletic, curious, spiritual, confident, high spirited, restless. Often are wanderers, truth-seekers, believers, at least metaphorically. Have universal concerns and strong beliefs and want to save the world. That said, they are also very fun-loving, gregarious, and great to be around. Ruled by Jupiter and typically associated with an archer, so I’ve depicted the sign as an archer high up on a hill, shooting fire into the sky. (I guess she’s on Ganymede or something since Jupiter is that big in the sky. XD )
I want to give very special thanks to Lindsey Carmichael, Olympic Bronze medalist archer, who posed for me for this sign and helped me out immensely with getting the archery parts to look halfway accurate (which I would have completely failed at without her help). She is an amazing and super-nice person, and I am incredibly honored that I got to work with her. Thanks, Lindsey!! <3 (and thank you for being so patient with me, haha)
Scorpio: October 23 - November 21. Fixed Water sign. Colors: deep red, royal blue, black. Intensely emotional, curious, intuitive, passionate, possessive, powerful, determined. Frequently associated with sexuality, the desire to merge with another, and to find fulfillment/completion with a partner or “other half.” Worries about how to make their needs met by other people; wants to receive rather than give. Emotions are incredibly intense, but often hidden beneath the surface. Associated with deep waters filled with secrets, transformation, the Underworld, repressed or hidden emotions. Scorpios have the passion and determination to get whatever they want done. In my illustration, I have Scorpio standing in a pool of still water in a cenote, holding her partner possessively but revealing little of her emotions in her face. (One of their associated stones is selenite, so I put a bunch of selenite crystal formations in the cave because it’s pretty :B also I love that the AD let me get away with putting the Scorpio symbol on the dude’s lower back, haha.)
Libra: September 23- October 22. Cardinal Air sign. Colors: Green, blue-green, pale green. Balance, harmony, judgement, symmetry, relationships. Can be very diplomatic, finds balance between focus on the self and on others; negotiates, but not forcefully, and finds compromise. They use reasoned argument and intelligence to win people over, rather than relying on manipulation. Enjoy communicating their thoughts, are very intelligent and social. Always looking for fairness and harmony in all aspects of life. I tried depicting Libra as a calm, centered man finding balance on somewhat precarious stones (high up in the air, because he’s an air sign :B).
Virgo: August 23- September 22. Mutable Earth sign. Colors: Earthy greens, browns, wheat gold and ochre. Detail oriented, rational, industrious, harvester, gatherer, organizer. They care about the group, and love to be of service to others. Less focused on interacting with others than they are taking care of others needs. Love working with their hands. Associated with harvests, crops, orchards, wheat fields, healing, teaching, sorting. Here, Virgo is taking her harvest to go share with others (originally I had her holding a list, but I like this pose better; now she has a bunch of papers rolled up in the basket on her back). This is another of my favorites out of the set :) <3
Leo: July 23 - August 22. Fixed Fire sign. Loyalty, leadership, generousity, outgoing, ambitious, lionhearted. Color: Orange, red, gold. Glowing warm colors. Associated with a roaring fire, the Sun, the Heart. Leos tend to be talented, creative, and dramatic, warm and enthusiastic, dynamic and idealistic, but can also be vain and stubborn. Natural leaders. Leo here is a woman in glowing armor with a fiery red mane of hair, carrying the banner of her people. :)
Cancer: June 22 - July 22. Cardinal water sign. Nurturing, protective, nostalgic, may appear hard on the outside but is sensitive on the inside. Colors: Pearl, blue-green, iridescent blues. Associated with caretakers, family, tradition, boats, lakes and streams, water plants, the moon, and being in tune with natural cycles. I decided to depict this sign as a woman reading a bedtime story to a little girl, floating on the water in a shell-house-boat thing.
Gemini: May 21 - June 21. Mutable Air sign. Intellectual, adaptable dual-minded, curious, young at heart, easily distracted. Colors: Yellow and monotone shades. Associated with communication, libraries, books, education, and passing on information. Has a myriad of interests but doesn’t always follow through. The sign of Gemini is traditionally known as the Twins, so I’ve depicted the sign as twin youths (perhaps with short attention spans) running around in a huge library sifting through papers and books. (the papers weren’t torn out of the books; maybe they’re just notes that they’ve taken that are flying around). I may or may not have been inspired to do this by a Gemini friend who likes books and cute boys in tailored clothes. ;) (
hi chiz! <3)
Today’s sign is Taurus! :D You may remember her from an earlier post; here is the full, final version. :) This is part of a set of illustrations I did for the Llewellyn Worldwide 2014 Astrology Calendar, which I am posting daily :)
Taurus: April 20 to May 21. Fixed Earth sign. Loyal, steady, receptive, sensuous, likes beautiful things. Colors - The colors of leaves and earth in May: emerald greens and browns. In tune with nature, and as such likes gardening and farming. These are people that enjoy making things: artists, craftspeople, bakers, musicians, gardeners, etc. I chose to depict Taurus as a strong, beautiful farm girl who loves working in the dirt but also appreciates a manicure and pretty jewelry.
Aries: March 21 to April 20. Cardinal Fire sign. Assertive, dominant, impulsive, adventurous, tend to be leaders. Dominant colors: Red, red, and more red. The sign is also associated with new beginnings (as Aries is the official beginning of the astrological calendar), fire, energy, athleticism, pioneering, leadership, stubbornness and a need to have their own way. Here, Aries is climbing up/down a volcano in an ‘idgaf’ sort of way. (Also, may I just say I’m very happy that my art director let me put some beefcake in this calendar, haha. ^.~)
Pisces: February 20 to March 20. Mutable Water sign. Caring, emotional, supportive, lost in their own thoughts/daydreams. Dominant colors: sea-green and blue, colors of mist and foam. The sign is also associated with deep waters, veils, mazes, secret places, the occult, and dreaming/sleepwalking. I have her pictured here lost in her own thoughts, rising from and merging with the waters and mist. (Pelicans and fish are among the associated symbols, too. Each sign has so many!) This is one of my favorites out of the set. :)
Aquarius: January 21 to February 19. Fixed Air sign. Independence, creativity, enlightenment, idealism, reform. Dominant colors: grays, silvery blue, and opalescent colors. Despite being the “Water Bearer,” Aquarius is an air sign, not a water sign - she pours the water of knowledge onto the world. This one was really tricky for me, even though I’m an Aquarius, since it’s a relatively ethereal sign.
